Improvisation as a transient artform and the consequences for Theatre pedagogics

Why do we improvise? What effect does improvisation have on art, culture and the individual? Being researched are features of this specific transient artform, which are irrespective of the character of material, with which we improvise. As a component of artistic and artistic-educational practice, the phenomenons of improvisation are being categorized content-wise in three research approaches, intertwined and termed: In Part 1 „Improvisation as a universal phenomenon“ is being considered in a historical context. Improvisation as a behaviour, based on constructive thinking and spontanious operating, developed into the principle of „improvviso“ during the Renaissance, had a significant effect on the course of European cultural history. In the 20th century the principle of improvisation as an intermediatory dialogue between art and life, lead to a downright „Cultur of Spontaneity“ with its multifaceted and differential improvisation approaches in fine arts, literature, theatre, music, dance and in performance art, which shall here be compared regarding their cultural relevance. In part 2 three dimensions of „Improvisation as a individual phenomenon“ are under consideration: 1. the event – the specific space-time-dimension, 2. the material – the artisic-aesthetic- dimension, 3. the improvisor – the individual-subjective dimension with its psychological, sociological, communicatic-interactiv and also neurobiological components. Special attention is given to the intense experience immanent in a felicitous improvisation, connected to a feeling of freedom, as well as the special way of interaction in a groupimprovisation, which is described as a „Communitas-experience“ by sociologist Victor Turner. Developed from these analysis, the „Systemic model of improvisation“ can prove, that improvisation feeds of the past, aims at futurities and moreover acts as an essential element of cultural education. The third part „Empirical studies of improvisation“, is a self-contained study with its own methodology. As regards contest, the survey of 266 artists and theateractors by questionnaire, deals with basic emotions, motivation and experiences as well as perception-of-oneself in reference to requirements and skills in improvisation and ultimately the experience of success. The evaluations add up to important clues both in the preparation and postproccessing of professional groupimprovisation in music, dance and theatre and in a didactical instructed improvisation in aesthetic education. Concludingly a sketch is drafted of a certain freedom as a specific quality of improvisation, expressed in such a way that, escpecially in guided improvisation, the improviser which is taken up with the activity, has to be included in the discussion. Methodic instruments as guidelines to the ascertained practice of Theatre pedagogics are thereto provided. Improvisation proves to be an important contribution to the extension of spontanous acting-, culture- and lifecompetence. Against that background this publication offers important fundamentals for the artistic and artistic educational improvisationpractice.zeige mehrzeige weniger
