• Alexander von Humboldt hatte entgegen landläufiger Ansicht kaum Gelegenheit, sich auf sein spezielles Reiseziel, die spanischen Kolonien in Mittel- und Südamerika, eingehend vorzubereiten. Die Mehrzahl der Berichte seiner Vorgänger konnte er darum erst nach der Rückkehr lesen und verarbeiten. Neben der Frage nach der Art, wie Humboldt das in vieljähriger Arbeit zusammengetragene Faktenmaterial umgesetzt und sich dabei zugleich in den Forschungskontext eingeschrieben hat, ist diese spezielle Art der nachträglichen Rezeption von entscheidender Bedeutung für die Funktion der Umkreisquellen im Werk Humboldts. Als Vorarbeiten für eine dringend erforderliche detaillierte Untersuchung werden die im Rahmen des Projektes einer »Humboldt Digital Library« für einen begrenzten Abschnitt von Humboldts Reise – das Flußsystem des Orinoco – gesammelten Quellen im folgenden genauer vorgestellt.
• Contrary to popular opinion, Alexander von Humboldt had little time to make in-depth preparations and acquire thorough knowledge about his most important destination, the Spanish colonies in Central and South America. So he could study most of the travelogues written by his predecessors only after returning home. Humboldt’s belated study of literary sources, combined with the question how he made use of the huge amount of facts he found during many years’ work and at the same time succeeded in being acknowledged as an outstanding researcher, are of great importance for our understanding the significance of background information in Humboldt’s work. As it seems necessary as well as promising to enquire into Humboldt’s sources in detail, this article presents within the “Humboldt Digital Library” research project a preliminary investigation of the different sources Humboldt used for describing a limited section of his South America journey: the Orinoco river system.
• En contra de la opinión general, Alexander von Humboldt no tuvo la oportunidad de prepararse detalladamente para su punto de destino especial, las colonias españolas en América Central y América del Sur. Por esa razón, no leyó la mayoría de los informes de sus predecesores hasta el regreso de su viaje. Crucialmente importante para la función de los fuentes contemporáneos en la obra de Humboldt no solamente es la manera con la que él acogió los datos que se habían compilado durante muchos años de trabajo y con la que influyó en la investigación, sino también esa manera especial de la recepción posterior. Como trabajo preparatorio para un análisis detallado e indispensable se presenta en los páginas siguientes las fuentes que se recogieron en el marco del proyecto "Humboldt Digital Library" para una etapa limitada del viaje de Humboldt: el sistema fluvial del Orinoco.
