The Theater - Stadium - Complex in Aizanoi

  • The Theater – Stadium - Complex in Aizanoi is the largest building in the ancient city of Aizanoi. The complex consists of a stadium in the south, a stage building in the middle and a theater in the north – a combination which is unique in the ancient world. The stage building has two marble facades: the theater facade, the Scaenae frons, stands at the north side and a three-storey marble facade is situated at the south side which closes up the stadium at its north end. The survey of all the architectural remains, the documentation of the visible parts, and the analysis of the results from older excavations show that the complex was built in six different construction periods. These periods can be classified into three phases from the early imperial time until the end of the 2nd century AD. The reconstruction of the complex and the comparison to other greek and roman festival-buildings give new ideas about the motivation of its builders in each phase and demonstrate the meaning of the complex in the historical context of the city. The Theater – Stadium - Complex was built under certain influences and is a good example to show the political activities and the success of the nobility in roman cities in Asia Minor. The needs for representation of the upper class can be seen in different variations in design, plan and construction of the Theater - Stadium - Complex. The construction and the change of design and planning during the 200 years of its existence show very well the development of ancient cities in Anatolia in the roman time – a development between influences of traditional and contemporary architecture.show moreshow less
